Dorks, dweebs, nerds, spazes, poindexters, eggheads, geeks ... all applicable synonyms for Jay and me, but we're comfortable with that. Our motto: embrace your inner dork and proudly fly your freak flag!!!
I must be honest ... I'm a latecomer to the whole Star Trek thing, having never even watched it before Jay and I started dating. There we'd be, sitting on the couch in either his or my parents' living room and suddenly the clock would strike 11PM, and all conversation would cease while the theme music to Deep Space Nine filled the room. At first when this happened I would find a book or magazine to read ... I was a history geek, not a sci-fi dork. But soon something insidious happened and I started watching, and then asking questions, and then seeking back-story ... Captain Cisco was cool, the whole Emissary storyline was just baffling enough to be interesting, little Eddie Munster had a starring role as the premier Vorta serving the Dominion, the Ferengi were simultaneously greedy and funny, and... well, you get the point.
There was no denying fact - I was hooked and it wasn't a big leap to suddenly find myself watching Next Generation (Captain Picard was sexy and that Q guy was an incredible bastard) and from there somehow we ended up watching Voyager ... eh, Voyager sucked - it was like watching Star Trek Stereotype. It was so bad that I started to make fun of the characters: Captain WrongWay; Commander Chicory; that spotted freaky chef / jack-of-all-trades Bootlick. Ugh ... the show went from bad to worse, but I digress.
I can't remember exactly how I found about the Star Trek Experience while researching for our Vegas trip ... did I stumble across it and then seek advice from my DISfriends or did my DISfriends set my feet on the path to dorkie good times? Either way, thank you Cass and Heather - I knew you wouldn't steer us wrong!!
So, let me share with those of you who want to know (and those of you don't) a few details about the Star Trek Experience. As I stated earlier, the attraction is located within the Las Vegas Hilton and it's an interactive experience. There are two rides: The Klingon Encounter and the Borg Invasion 4D. In the Klingon Encounter you try to evade the Klingons on a 24th century shuttlecraft with Enterprise crew members - the ride / show lasts 18 minutes. The Borg Invasion combines live actors and special effects to make the entire experience seem very realistic. You tour a futuristic research facility and then flee as the Borg attack and try to capture / assimilate you into their collective. This ride / show also lasts 18 minutes.
Both rides are a lot of fun but I think I liked the Klingon Encounter just a little better. I don't want to spoil the surprises for anyone so I'm not going to divulge any more information here, but if you're a Trek fan and haven't made it to this attraction in Vegas yet, get yourself over to the Hilton and revel in the geekfest!!
They also have a ton of memorabilia from all the different Star Trek shows and movies and the entire venue has been designed with a tremendous eye for detail. It's really quite an impressive and immersive experience.
Models of the Enterprise and Voyager
The Enterprise's sordid underbelly
There were also actors roaming around who portrayed various characters from the Star Trek series. We found this Klingon and Vulcan outside the front entrance as we were making our way inside to check out the Borg Invasion. They were both very convincing and never broke character; the Klingon was especially good - surly, confrontational, and downright insulting ... he cracked us up every time he opened his mouth.
I hope this Klingon isn't going to kill me...
Jay may be part Klingon ...
After completing our exciting Trekkie adventures we needed some food. There was no question as to where we were going: Quarks Restaurant and Bar. Quark is a Ferengi and he owns and operates a bar on Deep Space Nine's promenade. The Star Trek Experience has a small promenade area modeled after the one on Deep Space Nine with several stores where guests can purchase all kinds of Trekkie collectibles; at the entrance to the shopping area you will find Quarks. We were a little disappointed not to see Quark himself, but received prompt service despite the proprietor's absence.
There was no way that we could avoid ordering a drink here ... how can a Star Trek dork who likes booze not order one of the many cleverly named beverages on the drink menu? Jay and I decided to go for broke with one of Quarks signature drinks:
Mini Warp Core Breach
The warp core breach has ten ounces of alcohol and it includes five different flavored Rums, Razzmatazz, and fruit juices. Quark's also offers a smaller version called the mini warp core breach which only contains five ounces of booze. We decided to play it safe by ordering the small version, but as you can see even the small version is pretty damn big!
I think I could dunk my entire head in this drink!
I'll share, but only because I have to.
Sometimes with gimmicky drinks it's all show and not much else; such was not the case with this drink. It was chock full of alcohol but tasted like raspberry punch - drinking it through a super long straw that I had to half-rise from my chair in order to use was fun but highly inadvisable. Life lesson # 17 - never drink alcoholic beverages through a straw.
This, I think, is where all of our budgetary vacation good intentions flew out the window. We almost never order an appetizer at lunch, but for some reason ... knowing full well that we had dinner reservations and then a dessert tasting scheduled for later in the evening, we went ahead and ordered an appetizer anyway. Bye-bye budget, hello food-related spending spree!!!
Famous Ferengi Flatbread
This was our appetizer choice: grilled foccacia bread topped with fresh herbs and Parmesan cheese. We were given the option of adding Mozzarella cheese as well for an extra $1.00, and who can say no to that? This was hot and tasty - like eating cheesy pizza bread - and it really hit the spot. It also helped soak up some of the alcohol from our drink.
While we were enjoying our appetizer the Klingon we'd had our pictures taken with out front wandered through the restaurant, stopping occasionally to insult or challenge various patrons. There was a couple sitting at a table near us who were also enjoying a "fishbowl" drink and the Klingon stopped and said, "Are you sharing that drink?"
The man of the table answered in the affirmative.
The Klingon rolled his eyes and said in a ringing voice, "Cowards!"
Jay and I laughed ourselves silly at this but sobered up quickly when we found the Klingon glaring down at us. He didn't comment on our drink but did ask if we had ever tried Klingon food. Jay told him in his opinion that it was tough to find high quality Klingon food and asked in turn if Quarks "qagh" (Klingon serpent worms) were worth ordering.
Klingon: Eh, it's a little lethargic.
Jay: There's nothing worse than half-dead qagh; I've always found it's best enjoyed when live and energetic.
Brenda: How's the blood wine here?
Klingon: It's a bit thick and coagulated, actually.
We cracked up again and he decided to move on in search of fresh patrons to terrorize. The timing couldn't have been better because our sandwiches arrived just after our Klingon acquaintance left us. Up first, Jay's lunch selection:
Photon Torpedo
This is a baked submarine sandwich with Italian meats and cheeses, topped with lettuce, tomato, red onion, roasted pepper relish, and red wine vinaigrette. When pressed for an opinion Jay said, "This eye-talian sub sandwedge is meaty and tasty."
I ordered a turkey wrap, a bit of a stretch for me because I am not a huge fan of turkey - it's usually dry and tasteless. I wonder how the turkey sandwich of the future will taste ...
Talaxian Turkey Wrap
My wrap came with sliced turkey, bacon, lettuce, tomato, and mayonnaise in a cheddar cheese tortilla. It was surprisingly good and the turkey was moist - it's a miracle! The cheese tortilla used for the wrap was really tasty and flavorful - I think this was what really sold me on the entire sandwich.
By the end of lunch we were more than satisfied - Quarks provided good, comforting food in a playful, fun environment. There were plenty of dorks like us occupying other tables and drinking silly alcoholic beverages with goofy grins on their faces. Quarks is a safe haven for Trek geeks everywhere!
Wondering if we managed to drain our fishbowl?
How could you doubt us?
Silly readers, of course we finished our tasty drink! And later in a promenade store we saw this fishbowl and stand selling for $70. I can't believe they served us such a potent drink in such an expensive prop, but I guess the straws are designed to discourage people from picking the bowl up ... like we did.
One last picture on our way out ... Quarks bar with no patrons. They must all be on some exciting mission in the wormhole.
Quarks actual bar...where's Morn???

Is it just me or does Jay look a tad bit buzzed in that last photo? :) ;)
Deep Space Nine has never been my favorite version. I actually liked Voyager better! C'mon, who doesn't like the snarky holographic doctor? Sheesh!
Yes, Picard was sexy, but mainly because of the voice. But Q? Even though you'd want to hate him, I couldn't help but like him.
Ahem. I did the geeked out experience and lunch at Quark's, too. :) But I didn't order a fishbowl drink there. Catherine and I had a fishbowl drink (with 8 straws!) at the Voodoo Lounge at the Rio.
But I liked the Borg thing better than the Klingon thing. I thought the ending on the Klingon thing was a bit dated, which made it funny. The 3D Borg Queen was creepy. And I mentioned that I liked the Doctor. :)
The walk around characters are hilarious! We had seen two women characters when we went. One of them was a Klingon, and she was scarier than the Klingon male you had. The other was a female Andorian, and both characters had amazing hair and makeup like the characters you encountered.
I tend to avoid turkey for the same reasons you do. I had some sort of pita sandwich with steak, and I remember it was good.
Breanda -
I was an AVID ST:TNG watcher. I loved me some Picard. He was HOT. I never liked Jonathan Frakes character (number 1), but I loved that it had a readheaded Doctor!
We've done the experience several times and I ALWAYS geek out when we are on the "bridge" (if you know what i mean). I start giggling and I can't stop! Thomas always gets embarassed!
Anyway - loved the update and the piccies.
Live long and prosper!
Ms. H
THAT was the coolest drink I've EVER seen!!!
I was a genetic trekkie...meaning my dad watched the original obsessively when I was very little and I got a stuffed "Tribble"...is that how that's spelled...for Christmas!!!
It wasn't much a stretch for us to then move on the Captain Picard...I was a major Data fan! Loved me some Q too!!!He was delightfully mean and irreverent in a way that made you think he was hot...or maybe that was just me...
*ahem*
The sandwiches looked FABULOUS!! Being able to discuss your lunch with a Klingon is just icing on any Trekkie cake!!!
Were y'all able to walk a straight line after that drink?! I had TWO SMALL glasses of red wine on Saturday and suddenly the floor was wobbly.
I am ALMOST no fun anymore!
:)
can't wait to hear about more Vegas eats!!!
We just got back and stayed at the Hilton. My husband is also Star Trek fan so we ate here with his Mom. Thanks for your review! Everyone had those huge drinks but we didn't have one (so sad now) because we just had LOTS of margaritas at Mesa Grill! Too many great places to drink in that town! :)
I think Jay looks a little loopy and very happy. If he were buzzed he'd be surly. ;-)
Lori, that holographic doctor got on my last nerve. If it would have been up to me I'd have pulled his plug ages ago!
I loved Q - my favorite episodes included him. I wish they'd make an NG movie that Q had a starring role in. **forgive my ending that sentence with a preposition ... I'm tired**
The Borg Queen was creepy, and I liked the first part of the show ... it was the theatre portion that left me a little unimpressed actually. **now I've ended a sentence with an adverb..**
Thanks for coming by to snark with us!
Ms. H
Thanks for reading! I didn't like Commander what's his face either ... except for that one episode where he ended up on a planet where woman were dominant and men were just playthings and he walked around wearing leotards for the whole episode. That was funny.
I wish we'd stopped to get some pictures in the captain's chair, but we decided to spend that money on food (bwahahahahaaaa!!).
Live long and prosper right back atcha!
Campbell ... any drink with fog coming out of it is cool!
Tribbles! They were actually selling them at one of the Trek stores there and I almost bought one for Handsome Pete but then we decided to spend that money on food (bwahahahahahahaa ... anyone picking up on a theme here?).
It's not just you ... I thought Q was sexy too. As for the after-booze effects ... we didn't have to walk far at all. We took the Vegas monorail (not free ... there is a charge to ride) back to MGM and then walked back to our hotel from there. The fresh air wiped the buzz right off our faces.
Welcome back Chelsi! Sounds like you had a good visit. Tell us about Mesa Grill ... is it as good as we thought it might be? Should we pay Bobby Flay a visit the next time we're in Vegas?
All I can say is the next time you go back you need to be sure to order one of those big silly drinks! They're too much fun to pass up!
I gotta stop reading your reviews at night when I'm hungry, cus after looking at your food, I just want to eat FRIES!!! They looked really really good!!
That's pretty cool about the Klingon "encounter" at your table LOL! Too funny!
Rob was a big ST geek when I met him and his family also had DS9 on all the time on their TV. I never caught on to that one but I did end up watching Voyager in the second to last season and enjoyed it till the end. Then I really enjoyed Enterprise, which I know avid ST fans don't like but I liked it cus it wasn't Star Trekkie LOL! ;)
Thanks for sharing your Star Trek day with us!
I always had a "thing" for Scott Bakula ever since "Quantum Leap". And that dog that his character had, the cutest beagle ever. Aww.
And yeah, I thought Q was hot, too.
You mean you didn't buy the fishbowl??? I think that would be a wonderful way to enjoy an after dinner cocktail at home! LOL
Great reviews Brenda! I think we all need to start a collection to send you places to eat just so you write about it for us afterwards!
Cici
Brenda,
Yes, Mesa Grill was wonderful and did not disappoint us or my husband's parents who came with for the day. We ended up splitting 4 appetizers and 1 entree all were great! I have pictures of everything except the two margaritas that went down way too quick! :) We also ate at Table 10, Emerials new place at the Palazzo the next day for lunch. Again, the food was wonderful and in line with his other places we have been too by him. We were in town for a wine event so these are the only big meals we did, I recommend both restaurants on your next trip out!
Chelsi!
That looked like such a fun lunch! I'm more a Star Wars gal than a Trekkie but I know I'd have fun there.
That drink looks killer and I'm not a rum drinker.
I can't wait for more reviews.
Hey Cass!! I didn't think I was going to like Enterprise, but we started watching it on Sci-Fi and I think it's pretty good. But I've never been an avid fan and I can't watch the original shows ... they just make me laugh.
Thanks for taking the time to pop over and read. Give your girlie a big hug from Aunt Bendy! ;-)
Lori - oh yeah, Scott Bakula is a tasty looking man morsel. And although I'm not really a dog person I do think the beagle on Enterprise is adorable.
Cici - too funny that you mentioned buying the fishbowl! We looked at it but didn't want the hassle of bringing it home. A lot of their stuff is available for sale online so if we decide some day that we need a fishbowl to slurp from we can order one.
And you're too kind with your comments, but thank you! :-)
Chelsi ... that sounds yummy! When we heard that Emeril had opened another new spot we seriously considered giving it a try, but decided to have an Emeril free vacation for once. I'm glad to hear that you guys had a good experience ... your suggestions are duly noted!
Hi Deb! I think if you enjoy any kind of sci-fi that you'd have fun here. We had a blast!! As for the drink ... if Jay were here right now I'd say I wish we were sharing another one! ;-)
Uh, this last review was like reading Chinese to me until you got to the food!;} Not a trekkie girls here--the last time I watched it was as an original 60's rerun on 70's Sat. afternoon TV. You know, when all the "good cartoons" had gone off for the day. But I did stay at the LV Hilton when I was there (in 1986, heh). Too young to drink, too young to gamble.
The drink did look like an adventure! I'm betting you could find a big fish bowl at Michael's!
LOL Cass,me too,i'd had fruit for breakfast, three weetabix for lunch and then i read Bendy's review so am now sat here eating chips....Life's a bummer, then you die.....Great work Mrs Igetthemoutforfreeice-cream...;-)
Jamie, thanks for reading even if Star Trek is weird and scary. ;-)
The drink was excellent! And you're right ... we could find a fishbowl for less at Michael's but honestly, we'd never drink out of something like that here at home ... too much effort.
AFEG, I think you need a tasty burger or some greasy fries or maybe even some ice cream ... that might make you feel better. :-)
Thanks for coming over to read!
And I'll bet if your cat is anything like ours, Brenda, he would be trying to drink out of that bowl with you! Our cat has his coffee every morning...
Jamie, Pete would love this bowl if it were filled with tuna fish, salmon, and crab. Preferably layered so that he could experience a different seafood yummy with each bite.
He also likes to have milk in the mornings when I eat cereal or cream of wheat, but he will only accept it from my fingertip. We call it fingermilk and it's mmmm, mmmm, good!! :-)
