Our first choice for lunch after finally arriving in Vegas and checking in at Mandalay Bay was the Burger Bar, but the wait for a table was nearly an hour. After being on an airplane for five hours with nothing more than a crappy little oatmeal-apple-raisin bar to hold the rumbly-tummies at bay, neither of us were in the mood to wait longer for food than absolutely necessary. And so we found ourselves at the House of Blues, which is located on the outer edge of Mandalay Bay's casino. Regardless of the city it's located in, Jay and I have always had good meals at House of Blues and this was no exception.
We don't usually order appetizers at lunch, but we were both in "feed me" mode. Our choice was something that we've had before and which we knew would be a tasty, satisfying start to the meal:
Pan Seared Voodoo Shrimp with Rosemary Cornbread and Dixie Beer Reduction
This was a very generous portion with six peppery shrimpies swimming in a spicy beer bath. The good thing about this dish, in my humble opinion, is that the spiciness wasn't overdone - it was just enough to set my taste buds a tinglin' without scorching my tongue. The cornbread was great for sopping up the excess sauce and it was just a little sweet, which I actually prefer in cornbread. The only thing we noticed was that it was a tad on the dry side - thank goodness for extra sauce!
Jay's lunch:
Smoked Pulled Pork Sandwich with Jim Beam Barbecue Sauce, Cole Slaw, and French Fries
HoB sure doesn't skimp on the portions, do they? According to Jay this was a tasty selection with plenty of tender pork and well-seasoned fries. His only negative comment was that the BBQ sauce was too sweet and I have to agree with his assessment - I had a taste of saucy pork and it was too sugary. Jay is something of a sauce connoisseur; around here we like to call him Marinade Man because he can whip up a delicious marinade off the top of his head in no time at all, and they're never too sweet.
My lunch:
All Beef "Blues Burger" with American Cheese, served on a Toasted Sesame Seed Bun with French Fries
Boring and predictable this may be, but it sure hit the spot! I requested that they cook the burger medium and it was just right, with a nice pink tinge through the middle. The fries were delicious and salty and tasted even better when dipped in cheap yellow mustard.
Aside from several glasses of water, we washed down our lunch with a shared alcoholic beverage: A Category 5, which must be HoB's version of a hurricane. This drink was made with a couple of different rums, cointreau, and fruit juices and it was very, very good. It could only have been better if it had been served in the appropriate goofy souvenir mug as pictured on the drink menu. First the Adventurer's Club stops offering the Yakoose Moose and Monkey's Head mugs and now House of Blues sells out of molded plastic funny-face mugs on a Sunday ... what do two silly DINKs have to do to get their hands on an over-priced drink in a novelty cup???
First drink of the trip, but certainly not the last!
The wacky novelty cup that our drink wasn't served in thanks to a bunch of corporate schmoes who bought them all during Gospel Brunch earlier in the day.
Well, despite the lack of a squashed blue-man mug for our drink, the meal was excellent and we left House of Blues pleased with our choices. The restaurant has been a reliable choice for good food and service over the last several years and we will continue to visit them when we can. You should too!

Oooh that burger looked scrump-didilly-ump-tious!!! And those fries looked perfect! Well, even though you didn't get your squashed blue-face man cup, it looks like your trip has started off on the right foot :) Can't wait to hear about more!
Hi Cass! Glad this met with your approval - the burger and fries were excellent! Hope you enjoy the next review even if the food may be weird and scary (it's Red Square ... Russian themed).
Thanks for reading!
Off to a great start! Sometimes a good burger is just what's needed. :)
Hey there Smallworld - thanks for reading!
It wasn't the kobe beef burger that I wanted, but it was still pretty darn good. And the good news is that later in the week I did get my kobe beef burger at the Burger Bar and it was awesome!
Can't wait to tell everyone all about it!
Looking forward to hearing more!
That burger did look yummy and Jay's pulled pork sandwich didn't look to shabby either. Hey tell him to feel free to post some of his recipe marinades for us. I would love a new marinade to WOW my hubby with.
Laura
What a great surprise--the Vegas indulgence has begun! Both your and Jay's meals look really good to me as I sit here and eat a bag of popcorn for lunch. I tend to like sweet BBQ sauce with molasses. That is one ugly cup, by the way!
Yay! You're back! I'll be leaving for Vegas in...32 days. But who's counting? Can't wait for more reviews!
The voodoo shrimp look delicious! You and I agree about food being too spicy--it hides the taste of the food instead of enhancing the taste of the food sometimes.
Good to hear you had such great eats in LV. Can't wait to hear the details. I also like sweet BBQ so I thought Jay's lunch looked and sounded scrumptious! Really.....where do you guys put all that food? You must only eat when on vacation. LOL
Heather - thanks for reading!
Laura, I don't know if Jay's ever recorded one of his marinades for posterity (that sounds rather pompous, doesn't it???). He just eyeballs what we have in the house and throws stuff together and viola! Tasty meat juice ... yum!
Hi jamie! I feel your pain over your lunch. We're officially brown-bagging it for the next four months to make up for all the excess last week. That 3ounce package of tuna and raw carrots did not soothe the raging belly beast today at the office so now I'm stuffing my face with cheese (what else?).
As for the cup ... I wanted it precisely because it was so ugly. I'm weird that way!
HPHammer!!! I take it from your post that you are doing ok in LA with all those pesky fires again?
And you're going to Vegas next month? I guess I'd better get moving on these reviews, huh?
I can tell you that we didn't have a bad meal the entire trip - everything was terrific! I sure hope you have as much food fun as we did.
Sistah P, I have long been convinced that you and I have spectacular taste ... in food as well as men! ;-)
The shrimp were excellent!
Diane, you're more right than you know. Jay and I really only eat this way on vacation. During the rest of the year we're eating things like raw veggies, fruit, salmon, tuna, noodles, and peanut butter. That's why we're always so hungry when we travel!
I want a burger now and it's only 9.00am...;-(
Could i sue you guys for making me fat?
I just ate breakfast and now I'm craving a big ol burger LOL.
Brenda I can't wait to read more.
Hey B -
Can't wait to read the rest of your reviews of all food that is Vegas.
I've been craving red meat, so seeing that burger was tough! I guess I'll have to break down and eat 1/2 of one, :-(
Can't wait to read about the Russian food!!
Ms. H
Hey Brenda,
Love the Vegas review. I'm headed to Vegas this weekend and will be enjoying Burger Bar and Mesa Grill. Can't wait to see reviews of all you did!
Chelsi
YUMMM! We never made it down there! Oh well, we saved something for next time! :)
It was great meeting both of you!
We love HOB also but I've yet to try that shrimp dish, sounds really good. I could eat shrimp seven days a week!!!
AFEG, you may not sue us for your alleged weight issues but I promise to give you a kiss the next time we meet to make you feel better. Unless a kiss won't make you feel better, in which case ... I'll bring you some ice cream! ;-)
Hi Deb! I have to say that this was one of the best burgers I've had in a long time. Verrrrry tasty!
Hiya, Ms. Heimlich! The burger was great ... the next time you're at WDW you should give HoB a try. And the Russian themed place was sooo good! I'm working on it now but I don't think I'll have it finished until tomorrow night.
Chelsi have a great time this weekend! We were lucky enough to eat at Burger Bar later in the week and it was excellent ... the Kobe Beef Burger was incredible and Jay's Buffalo Burger was ... was ... I'm running out of adjectives! ;-)
Come back and tell us about Mesa Grill ... we thought about going there but other food bumped Bobby Flay right off the list.
Hi LeAnn! Thanks for stopping by to take a read ... I'm just warming up. Wait until you see the rest of our gastronomic adventures!
It was great meeting you and your hubby, too. And thanks again for the tasty drinks! :-)
Kathy, I know just what you mean about shrimp ... I could it eat it all the time and never get tired of it. I think you'd really like this appetizer - it's got good flavorful spice without being overpowering. It seems very cajun to me and I love the sweet cornbread ... yum!
YAY Vegas trip!!! That burger looked FANTASTIC!!! I'm not a red meat eater, but if I ever relapse, a good old cheeseburger would be the reason!!
Too bad about the mug...cuz THAT is reason enough to order what was probably a $300 drink! ;) (I had a Hurricane once...knocked me on my arse...but not before I danced on the bar...*sigh* doesn't take much! ha ha...sharing was definitely a good choice!! It's MUCH too early in the trip for bar dancing!!!)
can't wait for more!!!!
The drinks were our pleasure! It was a great time chatting! :)
Strange how I didn't feel it was awkward having never met before! :) I felt as if I already knew you both! :)
Can't wait to see the rest! I don't even remember the names of most of the restaurants we ate at! It's all a blurr!
Hi Bethany - thanks for stopping by to take a read! It was a most excellent burger but believe it or not we had even better ones later in the week.
As for the hurricane ... HoB's wasn't bad but we had one in New Orleans a few years back at the hotel we stayed at that knocked us for a loop - it was incredible and nothing like that kool aid junk they sell at Pat OBriens.
My bartop dancing days are far behind me, but when I did do things like that it was always under the influence of Long Island Ice Tea. Yum!
With all the cool stuff that happened to you guys, LeAnn, I wouldn't expect you to remember anything as dull as food. ;-)
Great review my dear, the only comment i have is "How come you still remember EVERYTHING you guys do even with a belly full of Jesus juice?"...
Must go the ship won't wait am just waiting for Hazel to apply her war paint and then it's off we go,laters dear....;-)
