Nobhill Tavern; MGM Grand, Las Vegas

Another Michael Mina Restaurant? They Have a Late-Night Happy Hour - We're Not Made of Stone!

Nobhill Tavern is the other Mina establishment housed at the MGM Grand. The hotel claims it's a gathering place for classic cocktails and Michael Mina's "unique interpretation of modern American tavern fare." All I know is that they were offering half-priced appetizers and drinks from 10PM to midnight and that's too joyful an opportunity to by-pass in Vegas.

Jay and I found two uber-comfy deep leather chairs with a well placed round coffee table and proceeded to acquaint ourselves with the drink menu. I ordered a Nobhill Cablecar - Captain Morgan Rum, Orange Curacao, and Lemon, shaken and served up with a bruleed cinnamon-sugar rim. I'm not always a fan of rum drinks because they tend to the sweet side, but this was fabulous. I learned on this trip that Mr. Mina's establishments make outstanding cocktails which are well blended and potent - this cablecar was no exception.

Nobhill Cablecar - I'd ride this every day if I could!

Jason ordered the Scottish Apertif - Hendrick's Gin, Lagavulin 16-year, and Dry Vermouth, stirred with Lagavulin "seasoned" ice and served up with bleu cheese stuffed olives and a chilled single malt on the side. Talk about a steal! Jay got two drinks for the price of one and way more booze than I did for one dollar more. I wonder if Jay flashed the bartender when I wasn't looking?

To help soak up some of the booze we decided to order the Charcuterie Plate which included Serrano Ham, Salami, Proscuitto, and House Made Pate'. It was all very good but the pate' was the standout; I say that because I've never cared for pate' prior to trying it at Nobhill Tavern but this stuff was a revelation and we both really enjoyed it.

Although our visit was fairly brief we thought Nobhill Tavern was a great little place to stop for a snack and a really powerful drink (or two in some cases). While we didn't find the entire tavern menu all that appealing, we did like the appetizer and late-night menu and the specials on drinks can't be beat. Great service from the bartenders and a relaxing atmosphere make Nobhill worth visiting again some day!
