So which came first, the idea for Jay and me to eat at Burger Bar or Giada's Weekend Getaways which showed her and her incredibly huge mouth inhaling a burger at said bar?
Does it really matter?
All I know is that when I saw the menu choices and the monster beef-patty she ended up creating on that particular episode one thing became crystal clear: we had to get ourselves some burger action in Vegas. So I did what I always do ... started googling and oogling and droogling. Imagine my joy upon discovering that the Burger Bar was located in Mandalay Place, which is the upscale shopping area located near the back of Mandalay Bay's casino near the House of Blues. Not only would we not have to leave the hotel ... we wouldn't even have to go outdoors ... a lazy-ass vacationers dream!
You'd probably like to know a little something about Hubert Keller's patty pad, right?
It's not your typical burger joint, that's for sure. The Burger Bar is touted as the ultimate burger experience, where the finest varieties of beef, turkey, buffalo, vegetarian, and vegan products are combined with a dizzying array of delicious toppings and fresh, fresh buns. Diners have the option of creating their own custom-burgers or ordering from a selection of chef's burgers among which is the Rossini, a $60 gourmet taste-treat made with Kobe beef, saute'ed foie gras, shaved truffles, and Madeira sauce. It was a bit much for us (especially me) but I'm sure someone out there simply adores it.
The menu is quite extensive and rather than list it all here I will take the lazy way out and urge you to examine Burger Bar's on-line menu and dream of the ultimate burger you'd create for yourself! The restaurant was a popular dining choice, and every time we wandered past it there was a wait for a table - on the afternoon that we finally created some space in our schedule for this experience we waited about 20 minutes to be seated, and I believe we arrived close to two o'clock in the afternoon.
Back to the matter at hand. Please keep both glasses filled ... Mmmmmm, Kobe Beef! Chocolate Burger: Warm donut, chocolate ganache, passion fruit, strawberry, and mint. Peanut Butter and Jelly Burger: Warm donut, peanut butter mousse, raspberry jelly, and kiwi. Creamy Cheese Cake Burger: Warm donut, cheese cake, and caramelized pineapple. In the end, Jay and I think that the Burger Bar completely lived up to the hype. The food was terrific and the selections were varied and inventive. Certainly pricier than most burger places but worth the money and worth the wait! Get thee hence to Burger Bar!
I did not need to spend much time with the menu - I knew from the moment I scanned the restaurant's website that I was going to order the $16 American Kobe Beef Burger. Here's the actual menu description: this American Kobe Beef from Snake River melts in your mouth, tender with an unmatched flavor, this is the most expensive beef in the world for the most discriminating palate. I ordered mine cooked medium, served on a plain old boring bun with American Cheese and Bacon and traditional Skinny Fries. Fresh tomatoes, lettuce, onions, and a zingy, zesty dill pickle were all included on the side.
Jay ordered the $16 Buffalo Burger which the menu describes thus: raised in Wyoming, this buffalo meat is lean, low calorie, low fat, and low cholesterol - extremely rewarding with a great taste. He ordered his cooked medium, on a Ciabatta Bun with Cheddar Cheese and Jalapeno Bacon to offset the healthiness of the meat. My daring darling ordered the restaurant's specialty Sweet Potato french fries to go along with his burger.
Bison Burger with Sweet Taters ...
I thoroughly enjoyed my choice. It was cooked perfectly - pink all the way through, and tender, juicy, and bursting with flavor. The cheese was melted over the top of the beef, and then covered with two slices of bacon cooked just the way I like it; firm but not crispy. And the fries were delicious - hot, salty, and lightly crisp on the outside and steamy and pulpy on the inside. They were delicious and could only be further enhanced by cheap yellow mustard!
You wanna see the inside of my Kobe Beef burger???
Go on, have a bite - you know you want to!
Jay equally enjoyed his choice - his beef was leaner than mine and perhaps not quite as tender, but it was still very juicy and flavorful. I tried a bite of the buffalo and it definitely had a distinct flavor that I'm not completely sold on, but Jay really likes it and that's what matters. I also tried one of his sweet potato fries - I'm not a fan of sweet potatoes unless they're mushed up with lots of butter and brown sugar, so I didn't care for these. Jay, however, thought they were excellent and highly recommends that you order them the next time a meal at Burger Bar presents itself for the taking.
So, you wanna see the guts of Jay's buffalo burger?
All forms of roaming animal make for a succulent meal.
There may be those among you who will be disappointed to learn that we did not order dessert. Since we knew that we would be "troughing" at Le Atelier later in the evening we played it safe and stopped at the full tummy marker rather than pushing the needle to replete (that would come later). And to be honest, we didn't find the dessert options all that appealing, but I will list them here so that you can make up your own minds.

Now this is one place Johnny would love to go to, he loves a good burger and my oh my did those look good. I also remember Giada's big mouth eating one of those puppies...LOL!
Hey Kathy - thanks for stopping by! Quite possibly the best burgers we've ever had ... aside from the ones we make here at home (but which do not include Kobe beef or buffalo).
I think Giada is gorgeous (I wish I looked half as good as she does) but damn her mouth is huge! LOL!
Brenda, another great installment! I've always been curious about the way you guys get your burgers down there. I remember the first time I ordered a burger in a restaurant in the States, the waitress asked me how I would like my burger....I replied "Ummm cooked!" LOL! Up here, you don't get a choice.
So was the Kobe beef THAT much better than your run-of-the-mill hamburger you get at the supermarket??
Other than the pink middle (sorry, not used to undercooked hamburger) it looked really good and I might have to make a stop there ;)
Thanks for sharing!
Hi Cass! Ummm, lemme think ... here's how it works: if you're in an establishment that prepares your burger to order, it's the same thing as ordering a steak. How do you like your meat cooked: Rare, Medium-Rare, Medium, Medium-Well, and Well-Done. I've omitted Raw and Charred since I think those two only apply to a very small percentage of the population. ;-)
Just so you know, a medium cooked piece of meat has a warm, lightly pink center and is brown everywhere else. It's fully cooked - usually between 150-165 degrees F.
I have more of a problem with rare and medium rare ... I don't like seeing blood juice, ya know what I mean. ;-)
As for the kobe beef burger - I hate to sound cliche but it really did melt in my mouth. It was unbelievably tender and juicy.
I don't really think that Kobe beef is best used for hamburgers, but it was fun to try it just this one time. And yes, it really was waaaaaay better than anything else you might try. When we make burgers here at home during the summer we use Ground Round, which is much better than plain hamburger, but it doesn't hold a candle to this burger.
Once you and Rob get back to Vegas you should try Burger Bar - I think you'd really enjoy it.
Yes, I remember Giada's big toothy grin before she chomped down on that monster burger!
The burgers looked great! I would have wanted to steal your burger off your plate. ;)
And I am not a fan of the sweet potato, either. Unless they are doctored up a lot. That's why the sweet potato gratin at Artist Point was a good substitute for the greens they had listed as the side for my steak last October. ;)
And I have hated Budweiser from the first time I've tried it, that I have refused to try any other products with "Bud" in its title. I'm so glad you had some really great choices! The first time I had Kronenbourg was on a cruise a loooooooong time ago. The cruise served them in cans that looked like quarts of oil! It was hilarious to hold the darn thing and gesture with it. "I'm down a quart, fill 'er up again!" Hee.
Oh, where was I? Yeah, the meal. I could go for a burger now. I can't wait to see the Le Atelier meal!
Somehow I knew you'd be keen on that Kobe burger, Lori - mmmm, mmm good!
I make a mean sweet potato casserole at Thanksgiving - when I'm finished with it it almost ends up tasting like hot pumpkin pie! Good stuff.
And this should come as no surprise, but we first tried the Krone at one of the F&W Festivals a few years back. It's only been the last year or so that we've actually been able to find it for sale here in Stinktown. It's one of my favs.
As for L'Atelier ... you will like it very much!
Oh YUMMY! I'm off to check out the menu on line. I remember watching Giada and thinking what a great place!
You burger looks awesome. I'd probably like Jay's but not the sweet potato fries :p
Oh, no! You passed up the dessert!
We actually tried the chocolate burger and the cheese cake when we were there last year and they were super!
But you got the important stuff -- the fries! I am actually a big fan of sweet potato fries. I am always impressed when I go somewhere and they're actually crispy.
Hi Deb! They have a really fun menu at Burger Bar and I loved all the different build-a-burger options they had.
And yes, if I do say so myself, my burger was awesome-icious! ;-)
Hammer! don't be too disappointed in our lack of dessert at the burger bar ... we made up for it at L'Atelier with something like 7 desserts!
perhaps some day if we make it to the "local" burger bar Jay and I will try a dessert burger.
And you are spot on with the fries - they were very crispy, which really impressed Jay.
Wow...if I was a red meat girl, that Kobe Beef burger would be my idea of Heaven!!!
Does Kobe Beef taste better than just regular cow?
I've always wanted to know!!!
I am a tad shocked at the lack of dessert...your tape worm is going to get ticked off and pinch you or something!
can't wait for what's next!!!!
Great installment! I did not know about this place for my trip or i would have gone. There is a restaurant that serves kobe beef burgers here in Atlanta that are to die for! The desserts sound cute too - I love how they are described as burgers also!
Looking forward to hearing what you thought of Le'Atlelier. I dined there during my recent trip as well.
Thanks again for sharing your reviews with us!
Jacque
MMmmmmmmmmm burgers. I definately need to hit this place up in October. My Dan will be very excited. Seems like thats all he eats when we go out!
I've had buffalo steaks but not burger. I bet thats good.
Thanks for the review!
Hi Campbell! Ummm, yes, Kobe beef blows regular beef out of the water! That's why we can't afford to eat it. ;-)
We'll make up for the lack of dessert at dinner, trust me!
Jacque, burger bar is terrific so when you get back to Vegas now you know it's there waiting for you!
Thank goodness Kobe burgers are few and far between around here or I might have to get a second job to feed my new habit. They're delicious, aren't they?
Ooooooooo .... you went to L'Atelier too? Sneak peek: we loved it!
Thanks for reading! :-)
Hey Jennifer! Long time no see!
If you guys like burgers then this is the place to go! They have a great beer selection, too.
I must have been the only one that missed this episode of Giada's exploits--I do find myself wondering just how many teeth she has sometimes...
Those burgers look great (just need to be med. well for me ;))! I'll take Jay's burger and your fries, Brenda. I tried a buffalo burger onece and found it very tasty, but not very different that regular cow, so maybe my tastebuds don't know the difference.
Hey Jamie - you can have any burger you want, just get yourself to Burger Bar when you have a chance ... it's just that good!
