Nathan's Hot Dogs, The Luxor

Nathan's Hot Dogs, The Luxor, A Late and Tasty Lunch ... (4/24/08)

After a busy day of eating breakfast, printing boarding passes, gawking at the afternoon tea selection at the Four Seasons Hotel ... next time we are so having tea at the Four Seasons ... buying bargain merchandise at the Coach outlet, and catching up on family gossip with Jay's aunt, our tummies were ready for some more sustenance. Knowing that we had reservations for dinner at Aquaknox later in the evening we didn't want to eat anything too heavy.

Years of watching the annual Coney Island Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest on ESPN every Fourth of July had piqued our curiosity - were Nathan's dogs really that good and how on earth does Takeru Kobayashi eat 50+ of them in twelve minutes?

There was also an extra push in my mind because my dear DIS-friend Nancy swears by Nathan's so much that she says it's her first stop once she deplanes at Orlando International Airport on her way to WDW.

The good thing about waiting until 3PM to have lunch, at least in the normal world, is that the crowds tend to be minimal. We found that normal doesn't really apply in Vegas, especially on the Strip. But apparently no one goes to the Luxor anymore. The place was deserted and we had the pick of the food court ... so Nathan's it was!

I ordered a plain dog that I later dressed up with some mustard while Jay ordered a dog drenched in chili and jalapeno peppers - we shared an order of waffle fries with some hot cheese for dipping and washed it all down with some cold bottled water. These are big hot dogs and after eating one I can't imagine how someone can scarf down dozens of them in less than 15 minutes. Jay and I watch that hot dog eating contest every year and we always have the same reaction: We are repulsed and yet we cannot look away. ;-)

Final verdict ... pretty darn tasty despite the somewhat stale buns. And the perfect afternoon snack to hold us over until our six o'clock bar-meet with some Internet friends followed by a seafood dinner at the Venetian with the aunt and uncle.

It's just not vacation until you've had a dog!

I love Nathan's too Brenda! My first taste was during my first visit to Las Vegas at the NYNY. I enjoy the dogs but I REALLY enjoy those fries!!!! When we have time, we also like to visit the one in Orlando airport, yum yum! Thanks for the pic, it made me drool ;)

Hi Cass! I thought you might like this mini-review.

I have to agree that the dogs live up to the hype and the fries were pretty good, too. I liked them dipped in that "cheese" sauce.

I think the next time we're waiting on a flight at MCO we might have to finish off our vacation with another dog from Nathan's!

Thanks for the honorable mention B. Looking at that picture all I can say is Yum yum gotta get me some!!! It's probably a good thing Nathan's is no where to be found around SE Wisconsin. I'd be in big trouble if it was.

Glad you enjoyed the stale bunned dogs though.

Hiya Mother Goose! How could I not mention you when reviewing Nathan's? It's your fault we ended up there in the first place and now it's your fault that we'll eat there again some day. ;-)

There aren't any here in STL either. It's better that way.

This is one report that I knew I could read while hungry because I HATE hotdogs. I haven't eaten one since I was a kid and have no plans on ever eating one again LOL!!!

I'll getcha with the next couple of updates, Deb, of that I'm sure! ;-)

Thanks for stopping in to take a read even though it did involve hot dogs. It will get better soon, I promise!

It could have been worse than stale buns. Two words: whole wheat.

Auuuuuugh! ;)

I haven't had Nathan's hot dogs. I don't get the appeal. Heh.

I forgot all about the sacrilige of whole wheat hot dog buns that are being served at WDW!

That's just wrong!

As for Nathan's ... we really wanted to try them just to see what the fuss was all about. They were good, but for you Chicago dwellers they're probably nothing special. ;-)
